Several years ago, a study on the number of jobs available to teens in the inner city of Des Moines showed approximately 42 job types (newspaper carriers, fast food, etc.) An additional study revealed that adults held more than half of these jobs, proving that job development was crucial if we wanted to help young people break the generational poverty cycle.
This was the driving force behind the founding of Freedom Blend Coffee in 2011 by Freedom for Youth Ministries. Young adults and teens blend, roast, package, and deliver premium direct trade coffee to individuals, businesses, and churches across the Des Moines Metro and beyond. Many of these young people were homeless, aging out of foster care, or living in very difficult situations. Through Freedom for Youth, they are now mentored, valued, and loved.
As more teens and young adults come through the doors of the ministry for Freedom for Youth's programs, a need to expand job development opportunities was recognized. In 2014, Freedom for Youth purchased a building adjacent to its Des Moines campus to renovate into a full-service coffee shop that employs 30 to 40 high school and young adults. Job opportunities incorporate all facets of the coffee business including baristas, roasting coffee, food preparation, inventory oversight, customer service, management, and more.
With on-the-job coaching and training, Freedom Blend Coffee offers a great work atmosphere, team oriented environment, and help with career advancement. Optional workshops are available to enhance individuals' work training experience as they develop soft skills in customer service, career preparedness, and professionalism.
The Des Moines Freedom Blend Coffee Shop, will be a state-of-the-art facility with a full commercial kitchen, drive-thru window, meeting rooms, patio seating, and more. The coffee shop will be a clean, safe, Christ-centered environment where the public can experience what God is doing in the lives of the youth served at Freedom for Youth Ministries.
